What is PrEP?

What is PrEP?

Pre-exposure prophylaxis (or PrEP) is a method for people who are HIV negative to prevent and reduce the risk of HIV infection by taking one pill a day. The pill consists of two medicines tenofovir and emtricitabine. Studies have shown that PrEP is highly effective for preventing HIV when used as prescribed.

Who is PrEP for?

PrEP was created for those who may be at risk for contracting HIV from sex or injection drug use. You may want to consult with an AHF HIV Specialists about PrEP if you:

  • Have a HIV positive partner
  • Have an at-risk HIV partner
    • This would include individuals who have had anal or vaginal sex without condoms
    • People who have had sex partners in the past six months that do not know their HIV status
    • People who use injection drugs
  • Have a partner that has sex partners who do not use condoms regularly
  • Have a partner that has been diagnosed with another STD in the past six months (chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis, herpes, hpv)
  • Have injected drugs, shared needles or recently undergone treatment for drug use in the past 6 months

PrEP is not for individuals who are HIV positive. Our HIV Doctors regularly consult and recommend medications for HIV positive individuals on a case by case basis. If you do not know your status or believe that you may have HIV symptoms our AHF Healthcare Centers offer free & confidential HIV/STD testing.

How to use PrEP?

PrEP involves daily medication and regular visits at least every 3 months to a health care center for routine check ups and HIV/STD Testing. Although PrEP, when used as prescribed may prevent HIV infection there are still other precautions you should take. PrEP alone is not the answer. Not using condoms regularly increases the risk of contracting sexually transmitted diseases such as gonorrhea, hpv, chlamydia, herpes, etc.  Our HIV Specialists at AHF recommend the combination of PrEP and condoms to reduce the risk of infection of sexually transmitted diseases and HIV.
